Export Your Project

With the plugin installed, you can now export your KiCad project for review.

a. Open Your PCB in PCB Editor

Open your KiCad project and launch the PCB Editor. The plugin runs from within the PCB Editor, not the schematic editor.

Open Your PCB in PCB Editor

b. Click the Traceformer Icon

Look for the Traceformer icon in the PCB Editor toolbar. It appears as a small circuit trace logo. Click it to open the export dialog.

Click the Traceformer Icon

c. Export and Save

The plugin will package your schematic, netlist, and project files into a single archive ready for upload. Choose a location to save the export file. We reccommend adding a revision tag to the filename to help keep track of reviews.

Upload to Traceformer.io

Once you have your exported project file, upload it to Traceformer.io to start your automated review.

  1. Visit Traceformer.io in your browser and sign in or create an account.
  2. Drag and drop your exported project file into the upload area, or click to browse.
  3. Attach any relevant datasheets for components in your design.

Traceformer.io will parse your project, cross-reference your datasheets, and run a comprehensive schematic review. Results typically appear within a few minutes.

Troubleshooting

Plugin doesn't appear in toolbar

Make sure you're in the PCB Editor (Pcbnew), not the Schematic Editor. The plugin only appears in the PCB Editor toolbar. If it's still missing, try restarting KiCad after installation.

Installation fails with an error

Ensure you're using KiCad 7.0 or later. Older versions may not support the plugin format. Also verify the zip file downloaded completely and isn't corrupted.

Export produces an empty or incomplete file

Make sure your schematic is saved and annotated before exporting. The plugin reads from saved files, so any unsaved changes won't be included in the export.
